If you live in the Marion, Indiana area and would like to ride with us, just show up a little early. We meet at 11:30AM Wednesdays at Gabriel's in The North Park Mall, Marion, Indiana.
We welcome anyone that rides.Larry Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13165124809028390033noreply@blogger.comBlogger123125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316457060457737822.post-7435608432615364152017-09-21T19:47:00.002-04:002017-09-21T20:00:58.397-04:00Crop DustersWe road up to The Red Apple (intersection of IN 15 and IN 114) for lunch. After lunch, we rode east to North Manchester. Leaving North Manchester we traveled east to Ritterhouse Road. We went north along the river to Liberty Mills. We then went east to South Whitley. Before we got to South Whitney we saw two crop dusters spraying soybeans. One of the pilots must of saw us and made a "dry pass" down the corn field near the road we were on. I didn't realize what he had done until my wife watched the video and brought it to my attention. After being entertained by the pilots, we rode in to South Whitley and then home on IN105.

Nice ride today. Riding today were Merle Combs, Steve Smith, Larry Burke, and myself, Larry Davis.

Nice weather with a high of 88 degrees.

Here's a video of the crop dusters: Crop Dusters
After eating lunch today at "Carrie's Restaurant" in Montpelier, Indiana,

we rode over to Berne, Indiana . Berne is in the center of "Amish Country". Even the furniture store in Berne looks German:

After a little searching east of Ossian, Indiana, I found the Minion grain bin. it was so exciting (for me at least) as I love "Despicable Me" and "Despicable Me2". Also, the "Minion" movie.

Here it is in all it's glory:

It looks just like "Lary Minion"! (One R for Lary) or maybe "Kevin Minion". I'm not sure! :)

Here's a link to Channel 21's story about the Minion:

Minion Story

There must have been too many visitors to see the Minion since the news story was shown, as the driveway was blocked off, and "No Trespassing" signs were up.

We stopped at Bluffton's McDonald for chocolate sundaes on the way home.

Six of rode today..Merle Combs, Jerry Cole, Charles Thomas, Larry Burke, Larry Davis, and Billy Niverson.

We rode 139 miles in very nice weather (82 degrees).Larry Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13165124809028390033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316457060457737822.post-63865908788538398692016-08-10T15:54:00.000-04:002016-10-02T17:59:18.671-04:00Elwood AirportMerle led us down to Elwood Airport Restaurant for lunch. The air was very hot (89 F) and still.

None of the wind farm windmills were moving in the still air. I noticed one windmill was turning on the way home. I can only believe that this is the biggest hoax perpetrated on the American public (wind power.) The only ones making money from them are the installers, the energy companies, and the farmers that lease the land for them.

Anyway, we had a nice lunch at the Airport Restaurant. (Click on pictures to enlarge them.)
I rode about 66 miles today. We only rode to Elwood and back due to the heat.
Elwood Airport when we use to fly in there. I took this shot as I was flying over in my Challenger Ultralight airplane (2001).
With the loss of a few members, the "Over The Hill Gang" rides on. It's funny, really, how the rider's group has lasted so long, way before I started riding with them, and still continues today. I've talked to some of the older riders, one, Charles Thomas --86 years old and still riding-- tells me they use to ride with 20-25 members. Today, we are lucky if six or seven riders show up.

Anyway, six of us rode to Huntington yesterday, and ate lunch at The Country Post Restaurant. After lunch we road River Road along the Wabash River to Andrews. From Andrews we rode to Lagro, and then on to Wabash. Since it was so warm (near 90 degrees), we made a short day of it and rode on Old State Road 15 south to LaFontaine, and then home. We rode about 55 miles today.

Riding was Merle Combs, Charles Thomas, Larry Davis, Steve Smith, Larry Burke, and Bill Niverson.Larry Davishttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13165124809028390033noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7316457060457737822.post-61396388267671235592014-08-01T20:22:00.002-04:002014-08-01T20:22:48.696-04:00Francis Slocum GravesiteOnly four showed up this past Wednesday. It was a little chilly, which might have kept some away. Merle Combs, Jerry Cole and I rode over to Chism's Corner for lunch. Billy Niverson drove his car over and joined us there. After lunch, the three of us who were riding rode up IN 13 through Swayzee, Meir, Somerset to county road 950 south and turned west until we got to The Indian Cemetery where Francis Slocum is buried. We walked around the cemetery and looked at all the graves. Here's a map where the cemetery is located:
I laughed out loud a couple of times at lunch, especially when Jerry Cole told me about the flying squirrels in Fairmount. I really enjoyed being out with the guys. I should tell them that more often.

We rode over to North Manchester on St. Rd. 114 and then north on St. Rd. 13 to North Webster and Syracuse where we stopped at McDonald's for coffee and ice cream. After the stop we rode around Lake Wawasee and then south on St. Rd. 105 to St. Rd. 9 and home.

Eight of us road today: Merle Combs, John Nave, Jerry Cole, Larry Miller, Charles Thomas, Larry Burke, Billy Niverson, and myself, Larry Davis.

The weather couldn't have been nicer at 77 degrees, little wind, sunny skies with pretty fluffy clouds ( I was sitting on my bike looking at the clouds thinking what a beautiful day this is!) I rode 152 miles. I left home at 11:00AM and got back home at 5:00PM.
I've only ridden three or four times this year, but I got away for a ride with the gang yesterday. Five of us rode down to Gaston to the Mill Street Inn for lunch. It was hot, 91 degrees, but as long as we were moving it wasn't bad at all. After lunch, Merle lead us over to IN 3 and then north to Eaton. We rode the back roads to Hartford City, then Upland, and home. I road 77 miles total, and enjoyed being back riding with the guys. There were five of us riding today..Merle Combs, Charles Thomas, Larry Burke, Billy Niverson, and myself.
Today, seven of us rode to Nick's restaurant in Roanoke, Indiana for lunch. Larry Burke, Larry Davis, Jerry Cole, Billy Niverson, John Nave, Merle Combs, and Charlie Thomas.

After lunch, six of us rode over to I-469, then north around Ft. Wayne to the New Haven exit. Larry Burke left us for errands in Ft. Wayne. We went east along the Maumee River toward Antwerp, Ohio. We stopped in Antwerp for a break, and then rode US 24 back to I-469. We turned off I-469 and went south on IN 1 through Ossian and then Bluffton, where we stopped at McDonald's for coffee and ice cream sundaes. After McDonald's, we rode west to the junction of IN 3 and IN 124. I continued west on IN 124 to Mt. Etna, and then home on IN 9 to Marion. The rest of the group turned south on IN 3, and then home. No pictures today, as we didn't stop much or see anything unusual.

I rode 171 miles and the weather was very nice. We saw lots of Amish farms with large work horses. Very nice ride today. Thanks Merle, for leading.

Merle Combs was nice enough to lead the seven of us up there, and back (safely), Wednesday. We started out at 9:30 AM at The Five Points Mall parking lot, and rode to Ugalde's restaurant across from Grissom Reserve base near Peru. We had "brunch":

After we ate we rode up US 31 to South Bend and the museum. The museum is located at the corner of Washington and Chapin streets in South Bend.

Here we are getting off our bikes at the museum:
The museum is actually three museums in one building: A Studebaker Museum, Raclin Museum of Notre Dame History, and "Kids First" Children Museum. There are also several galleries there, as well. We looked into the Notre Dame History Museum, and saw these two drum majors:

This car with the blue wheels is like the one that a lady drove in Marion many years ago. Several of the guys recognized the car and said it set by the courthouse square many days. It's an electric model Studebaker, and the battery weighted 975 pounds. It has a short wheelbase and is very tall. I believe this was a 1904 model. Here's a link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studebaker_Electric

There were hundreds of cars here, so I took pictures of the ones that meant something to one of us, or was unusual (or was very pretty!)

As it was explained in the museum, the Studebaker brothers started out making wagons, like this one, and wooden wheelbarrows for miners. Then, they started making carriages for people, some famous. They made the carrage that President Lincoln took to Ford Theater the night he was assassinated. On with the cars:

I liked this one because it had a "split windshield" you could open to let air in.

This is one of those cars that you have to see in person to appreciate how pretty it is. We saw one like this that had a compartment, near the back wheel on the lower side, that you could store your golf bag.

This was an "advertising car." One that they used in the newspaper and magazine ads to sell the cars. On the side, it says, "Studebaker Commander''" then "23,000 miles in 23,000 minutes." Not quite, 16 days, they drove it 23,000 miles.

Here's another:

They had a picture of the Studebaker factory back in it's hay-day. We rode past the place where the factory was located on the south side of South Bend. It's now a big grassy field with no sign of a large factory complex.

I'm not sure what this strange car is. It has tiny pieces of metal spot welded all over for a skin. There are many face shapes with eyes. Next, was a VW Beetle covered in metal "lace":

This car was a favorite. A 1953 Studebaker Commander Starliner. Jerry Cole had one just like this one, and my brother-in-law, Delmus Duckworth, had a 1954 model like this in green. Designed by Raymond Loewy, this was a car way ahead of its time. What a beautiful automobile!

I looked for a 1947 Studebaker Land Cruiser, but didn't see one. Our family had one, and we drove it to California and back in 1948. Three adults (my Mom, Dad, and older brother, Don) two teenage girls (my sister Ilene and her friend, Janice Roach), and me, a nine-year-old. Of course, we had our dog, "Tippy," with us. My "job" was to take care of "Tippy." I "fell down on the job" and we left "Tippy" in a motel in Arizona. My Dad was furious when he had to drive back 60 miles to get our dog. The dog was happy to see us! :)

Lest We Forget..It was a short ride today, and only three riders rode. The 94 degree heat may have been a factor. Merle Combs, Jerry Cole, and Larry Davis rode down to Elwood for lunch. We rode through the windmills north of Elwood on IN 13. Looks like this:

Windmills (Click for video)

We ate at the Airport Cafe on IN 37 north of Elwood. I used to eat there when they had a runway, and we would fly our airplanes in there, and eat. The runway has been closed for five years, and it's now a soybean field. I knew one of the waitresses, there, from my flying days, and she caught me up-to-date on what's been going on. The food was good and the service better.

After lunch we rode down to Strawtown, and then turned left and rode along the White River over to Anderson. We then turned north on IN9, and rode to McDonald's at Alexandria for ice cream and coffee. The flag at McDonald's was at half-staff for Sept. 11. We saw several flags at half-staff along the ride:

I rode 98 miles and it was hot!
We rode to The Red Apple Restaurant, House of Pancakes for lunch. It's located at the junction of IN 15, and IN 114, north of Wabash. They have the best food of all the places we eat. Just delicious!

After lunch, we rode over to Syracuse, and Lake Wawasee. We rode around the lake, and I took pictures. After the picture taking, we rode back into Syracuse to McDonald's for ice cream and coffee. After that, we rode home.

We started out with seven riders, Merle Combs, Larry Davis, Charley Thomas, Art Adrianson, John Nave, Jerry Cole, and Billy Niverson. John Nave had to leave after lunch and ride home. Somewhere going around Lake Wawasee, we lost Billy. We never saw him again.

I rode 159 miles, and the day, and weather, were perfect. 80 degrees and very little wind.
The Garden is very pretty after all the work they have done on it over the last several years. The entrance:

First thing you see are pots of petunias and impatiens:

And beds of pretty flowers:

There is a waterfall on the west side of the Garden:

And, plenty of Koi in the pond below the water fall:

There's much more in the Garden..a gazebo, statues of children, etc. It's really nice.

I rode to our regular meeting place, Gaberial's, and six of us showed up to day. John Nave, Jerry Cole, Charlie Thomas, Larry Burke, Merle Combs, and Larry Davis. I wanted to ride down to Blountsville, Indiana, so Merle led us down to Gaston for lunch. After lunch, we rode down to Blounstville, which is about 10 miles south of Muncie, just off US35. I was looking for an 1812 War memorial that was suppose to be in the Blountsville Cemetery. The memorial is suppose to have my Great Great Grandfather's name on it (Peter Davis). We looked and looked, and never found the memorial. I'll do some more research on it, and maybe go back down there by myself. It was too hot to do more looking (about 90 degrees), so we quit, and took Charlie to Losantville so he could buy some gas. We rode west on IN 36 to IN 109, and then north on IN 109&9 to Anderson Power Sports. Merle and Billy stopped off there, and the rest of us rode on home.

I rode 137 hot miles:
First, we stopped at Bob Evans in Wabash for lunch. After lunch, we headed north on IN15 until we got up by Laketon, and then went east to North Manchester. We then went north, on IN 13, to Webster Lake. After looking at the northern sky, our leader, Merle, decided it looked too dark to the north, and we turned south until we got to Bippus (I love saying Bippus!), and then Huntington, where we stopped for coffee and ice cream. After a break, we rode back home. It was the first ride on my new Harley Switchback, and it was good.

I rode 132 miles today with the temperature in the high 80s, and it was beautiful outside (a gift!).

Riding were Merle Combs, Larry Davis, Charley Thomas, John Nave, Larry Burke, and Billy Niverson.
The I&M lineman replaced the transformer and we got power back:

(as usual, click on any photo to enlarge)

Merle called to tell me that since it rained Wednesday, we would take a ride Thursday, instead. We met at Gabriel's at the usual time, 11:30AM, and rode to Ugalde's, on U.S.31 near Grissom A.F.R.B., Peru, for lunch.

As you can see, the parking lot was full. It sometimes takes us a while to dismount, and to mount our vehicles, due to our age, I guess:

We had a nice breakfast. Our waitress prides herself on taking menu orders using only her memory. She did a "bang-up job", and got all our orders spot on!

Since we had not been back to Monon, Indiana since Billy suffered his stroke there, Merle decided we needed to go back there under better circumstances. So, we rode up north to U.S.16, and then west to Monon.

http://www.mononconnection.com/

"The Monon Connection Museum" and "Whistle Stop Restaurant" is all about The Monon Railroad line. A train station and several railroad cars are outside for all to see:
I had planned to take a "food picture" of my apple pie with ice cream on top, but I seemed to have eaten it before I remembered to take a picture! So, I took a picture of Jerry Cole's cherry pie with ice cream on top, half eaten:

After pie and coffee, we rode home with no incidents or illness! It was a great ride in beautiful weather. Temperatures in the high 70s, low 80s. A little windy. Just right. We all got home around 5:30PM. I rode 180 miles.

The weather was a little chilly, but the sun was out in force. Six of us rode to Bob Evans at Wabash for lunch, where we all ordered a breakfast meal. After lunch we rode, almost, next door to the Brandt Power Sports building, which was closed on Wednesdays. So, we crossed the road and went to Brandt's HD for a visit:

They have so many motorcycles (update: I didn't buy that blue Switchback in the center of the picture (no ABS on that one), but I bought one just like it!)

After looking at bikes for awhile, we rode back into Wabash to Hill Street, which goes into "Old U.S. 24" and rode along the Wabash River to Huntington, and then home.
After lunch, we rode east and south of Roanoke, trying to
get around a large rain cloud we could see in the western sky. Merle led us as
far away from the black cloud as he could, all the way east to State Road 1. We
then turned south through Ossian and Bluffton. The sky got darker and lightning
started lighting the sky in the west. Soon after leaving Bluffton, on Indiana
124, we rode into the rain. Merle started leading us onto county roads going
south, but to no avail. The skies started to open up, and the wind was blowing
over 40 mph. We rode south pass Southern Wells High School, for a while, and
then Merle spotted The Wells County EMS building, and we pulled in.

After waiting for 30 or 40 minutes,
the fury of the storm dropped down so that we could continue on home in a light
rain. As we neared Marion, I saw the storm knocked out the power to the traffic
lights near I-69. Nearing home, tree limbs were down all over Marion. The power
was off when I got home. I took all my wet clothes off as soon as I walked in
the back door, and put them in the clothes washer as, they, as well as me, was
soaking wet! What an adventure! It makes you feel alive riding in a hard rain,
the wind trying to blow you off your bike, and the lightning lighting up the
sky!

I rode 134 miles today, five and one-half hours. The first day of May, 2013. The
first day I rode this year, although, some of the guys have ridden several times
before this. I think, going by the way I feel this evening, a shorter ride
might have been in order, the first time out.

We rode over to Gaston, and ate at The Mill Street Inn.
After lunch, we rode over to Mrs. Wick’s for pie at Winchester, Indiana. I had
apple crumb pie, warmed, with ice cream on it. I bought a sugar creme pie, and
brought it home for my wife and I to eat later. “Later” won’t be very long, I
fear, as it is half-gone already! I wanted to get a picture of the pie at Mrs.
Wick’s before I ate it, and post it here. Before I knew it, the pie was gone
with no picture. Oh well, always next time!

I received an email from Andy Darlington (Marion Airport manager) that there would be an Aerobatic Demonstration at Marion Airport, and the airport would be closed from 9:30AM until 10:30AM Saturday, 15, 2012. I emailed some of the riders and told them what was going on, and that they might like to go to the airport and see the demonstration. Merle Combs and Larry Miller were at the airport when I got there. We had to wait awhile, and then the demonstration started. A WW2 Stearman trainer airplane put on an aerobatic demonstration and then the airplane, and a fellow on a motorcycle raced each other down the 6008-foot runway. The motorcycle was traveling approximately 180mph, at the end, and easily passed the airplane, which was flying at approximately 140mph. Then the motorcycle raced down the runway, and the pilot dipped his wing so the motorcycle rider could touch the wingtip of the airplane. It was pretty exciting and a nice show.
Merle led us up north to the junction of IN 15 and IN 14, the home of The Red Rose Pancake House where we ate lunch. After lunch, we rode east to IN 13 and rode north to Syracuse and Lake Wawasee. We had ice cream at McDonald's and then, rode around the lake. After the lake circuit, we headed home.

We rode to Ugalde's Restaurant, across from Grissom ARB on US 31, for lunch. Merle led us along the Wabash River (water is really high) from Peru to Logansport. West of Logansport we rode to Towpath Road, also called "The Trail of Death." The Potawatomi Indians were led along this road on their way to be relocated in Kansas. See this webpage: Trail of Death also: http://www.potawatomi-tda.org/

We crossed over the Wabash north of Delphi and quickly ran into 3-4 miles of newly graveled roads. Finally, we came to IN 25, and rode on into Delphi.

The Wabash and Erie Canal came through Delphi in the 1800s, thus Towpath Road as the towpath was where the mules/oxen/horses walked to pull the canal boats. There is a small section of the canal still in Delphi.

Also, Delphi is the hometown of William "Dick the Bruiser" Afflis - Professional wrestler, for you "old timers!"

We had coffee and/or ice cream sundaes at McDonald's and continued on IN 18 back home.

Very nice ride, warm temperatures in the low 80s. Six of us rode today-Merle Combs, Larry Burk, Larry Miller, John Nave, Art Adrianson, and myself, Larry Davis.

I'd never ridden along the river through Muncie, so it was all new to me. They have a nice walkway beside the river that several people were using. One man appeared to be washing his clothes in the river! We came upon two police cars with lights flashing and an agitated woman nearby. I don't know if someone had drowned or what. For the most of it's distance, the river is too shallow to drown in, due to the drought we're having. I was trying to watch for everything, as there was a lot of traffic, so I didn't take any pictures. Here's where we rode along the White River:
Anyway, I'll try to make up for my absence with two posts tonight. First, The Seven Pillars:

The Seven Pillars (click here:) http://indianapolis-indiana.funcityfinder.com/2010/07/11/seven-pillars-of-the-mississinewa-in-peru-indiana/

Usually, we ride along Francis Slocum Trail up north to IN 124 and then west to Peru. We've passed the sign that locates the Seven Pillars but since it's on top of them, you can't see anything. Larry Burke suggested we ride back along the Mississinewa River, on the south side, and we could look at the Seven Pillars from across the river. Which we did. However, first, we rode up IN 15 through the fresh chip-seal, north of Wabash, to the Red Rose Cafe at the junction of IN 15 and IN 114. After lunch, we rode back south through the covered bridge at Roann, and on south to the Seven Pillars, and home. We decided to make a short day of it, as the temperatures were climbing into the nineties.

Here are a few pictures of The Seven Pillars from E 200 S on the south side of the river:
The ride was suggested by Jo Ann McGhee. I've been looking for new places to ride, as we seem to go to the same places over and over. I led the group, John Nave, Jack McClain, Merle Combs, Billy Niverson, and myself over to Ugalde's Restaurant on U.S. 31, across from Grissom Reserve Air Force base.

We had a nice lunch and then I led the group on a "Mystery Ride". I love to take the group to new places and not tell them where were going. It's a nice surprise, usually.

We picked up U.S. 24 at Peru and rode west past Logansport to Monticello, where I turned north. We rode north to Buffalo, IN and then west to Monon, IN. After asking several people where the railroad museum was (I should have looked it up on the internet before hand) we rode north out of Monon 1-1/2 miles to the Whistlestop Restaurant and Railroad Museum.

As soon as the guys saw a restaurant they went inside, ( I was hoping we would take a tour of the museum first), so I followed them into the restaurant.
After the waitress took our order, we noticed Billy acting strangely. He could not get hold of anything and looked strange. Merle said to me, "There's something wrong with Billy!". I agree with him, and asked Billy to smile. He did, but on the right side of his face only, not the left side. I'd read that was a sign of stroke, so I asked the waitress to call 911. She did, and since one of the waitresses was an E.M.T., she took care of Billy until the ambulance from Monticello arrived. The E.M.T.s from the Mono Fire Department arrived before the ambulance, so they looked after Billy, also. The ambulance arrived, they tested his blood gulose, which was very low, put him in the ambulance and started an I.V. The ambulance attendants got his blood gulose level back up, but said there was more than that wrong with him, so they took him to I.U. Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, IN.
The rest of us decided to ride home, as we couldn't do anything more. I called Billy's wife after I got home, and told her what had happened, and where Billy was. She had her brother take her over to Lafayette to visit Billy. Merle drove me back over to Monon, Saturday evening, and I drove Billy's T-REX back to my house where I garaged it until Sunday afternoon.

Sunday morning Kate Niverson told me that Billy was doing better and could swallow (which he couldn't do Saturday), knew where he was, and his condition. He only mumbles, and can't speak well. Kate said he will go through 30 days of inpatient therapy to get all his motor functions back. Merle drove out to my house, Sunday afternoon, and followed me as I drove Billy's T-REX back over to Kate and Billy's house, and put it in their garage. Kate gave us an update while we were there, and said mostly what she had told me before, Billy is getting better. Hopefully, Billy will be back traveling with us in no time!

I rode 186 miles-very hot, near 90 degrees, little wind. At first, we thought Billy had gotten too hot in his T-Rex, but that was not the case, as it turned out.

Five of us rode today, Jack McClain, John Nave, Merle Combs, Billy Niverson, and myself.
P.S. I wasn't going to post this until Billy is completely "out of the woods", but he's much better, and I thought some who read this blog would want to know what happened to him.
